ANIMATION REEL & LAIKA UPDATE - January 16th, 2012

I’m starting to realize just how ridiculous trying to blog everyday actually is.

For the second day in a row, I just haven’t had time to work on anything to do with the film. That’s not to say I’m not busy. I’m too damn busy!

I’m working desperately hard on a commission I owe somebody, and keeping up with all the shipping that goes along with the print business, takes up, what seems like, the rest of my time.

I’m not complaining though … I’m my own boss again, and there’s nothing better than that!

I figured I’d post up the animation reel I sent to LIAKA - Link I tried to get a job there a few months ago.

Its funny, those two sentences sitting on top of each other, because they're completely contradicting one another. If its so great to work for myself, why am I trying to get a job?

Well, a few months ago I found out the store where my wife works is closing. She has either the option to get laid off, or possibly transfer to another store ... but, if she goes to another store she’ll have to take a cut in pay, along with losing her benefits.

…and considering the fact the only reason she went back to work at all, was for those stupid benefits, there’s not much point in transferring.

I’m not sure what’s going to happen once her job goes away. I’m not sure I can support all three of us with my art business

… Maybe I will, since Tanya will be home to watch Tristan during the day, and that will give me more time to work.

Guess we’ll see what happens in a few months.

So anyway, that’s why I made up a reel and sent it to LIAKA, even though I’m happily working for myself. I'm just exploring my options and trying to avoid having to go back to painting houses.

I should also give you guys the update about what happened with LIAKA after I sent the reel.

They did actually call me back, the recruiting lady told me she liked my reel, but that there weren’t any entry level stopmotion positions available at the moment, and I should check back in the spring.

I thought it was really nice of them to actually contact me personally, even though they didn’t end up giving me a job … and I probably will try again.

See you all tomorrow.

Jeff, that was the best intro reel I've seen. One really gets a sense of you as a person and the power in the force your talents.

It's incredibly impressive that you taught yourself those complicated techniques. It makes looking at the animation test clips look like genuine alchemy.

Extraordinary.

You'd be an asset anywhere.

It's sinful to me that a good man of your abilities would have to paint houses to support his family. However, it is admirable when a man steps up and does whatever he must to provide for wife and child. There is great honor in being that kind of person. I salute you.

Thanks Shelley, that’s super nice of you to say. Too bad you aren’t hiring, I want to come and work for you.

… and when it comes to making a living, a guys got to do, what a guys got to do. I’m no different than anyone else.

The one thing I do realize though, is no matter what I’ve done, where I’ve worked or how much, or little, time I’ve had over the years. I’ve always made room for my creative endeavors some way.

So no matter what happens, I’ll still be doing this stuff.

When I think about it that way, it makes me feel like its all going to work … whether it gets hard or gets easy … it’ll still work out.
